2001 Hifly introduced the MADD 274 (a Freeride-Board with a volume of about 136 liters) - and instantly had a bestseller! Since then, their Shaper Klaus Jocham continued to cooperate closely with Hifly to further develop and perfect the Twinser concept. 2005 Hifly introduces the MADD 90, the fifth Twinser Board (MADD with 90, 115, 135 and 165 liters volume, as well as the MATRIX, a Polypropylene-Board).Often we are asked: What is the deal with the Twinser concept? Why do I need two fins? Two fins – that will slow you down, won’t it? There was much speculation and many questions, so now it’s time to reveal the secret.The greatest performance enhancement of twin-fins you will notice when you are at the limit – when the wind is too strong or the sail too big. A single fin at high speed produces so much lift that the tails get’s pushed up and the board becomes almost uncontrollable. Loss of speed, uncomfortable riding or even a wipeout is usually the result. To counteract this awkward behavior you are forced to apply a lot of pressure via your ankles to try to get a handle on it.But all this is not necessary! Shorter fins (with less leverage) result in less lift when sailed at the limit and therefore clearly offer much easier control. With the Twinsers the board always remains controllable and the windward rail does not rise on you. The board just keeps speeding along and you will enjoy the smoother and safer ride, even if your sail is too big or the wind is gusty.One more tip regarding mounting the back (rear?) foot strap: to take some pressure off the tail, you can mount the straps in an angle. In doing so, you automatically shift your weight further forward.There is yet another, decisive advantage to the Twin-fin setup being capable of handling a lot of foot pressure: No more Spin Out!Who does not know this unpleasant feeling, when the tail just slides out and tries to overtake you? That’s what happens when the tail is pushed out of tracking or the pressure on the fin becomes too strong (sail too large/ strong wind). The disruption of the water flow prevents a controlled ride and you have to slow down. Same principle applies here: two fins can handle more pressure than one.Windsurfers who primarily sail in shallower waters will also benefit from the lower draft of a Twinser-board. The MADD 165 for example happily rides with two 36 cm fins at a volume of 165 liters. Similar single fin boards have fin lengths of 50 cm or more. With a Twinser, you get on board quicker and are planing already, when other are still wading through the water.Two fins also mean more safety. In case one fin breaks, the second allows you to safely get back to shore.Disadvantaged on the upwind courses? No way!Compared to other Freeride-Boards you are definitely on a par. A Twinser-Board may not be able to reach the extreme angles of a Formula-Board with a 70cm fin, but who wants to do that anyways? The HIFLY MADD’s go upwind very well. At lower speeds our MADD’s are even superior.Slower than other Freeride-Boards? Again, a definite “No”! Having greater control when at the limit tempts you to further explore your full speed potential!Jibes with twin-fin – does that even work? It works really well actually! The two little fins allow the MADD’s to turn on a dime. You will be surprised just how easy these boards are to jibe. Even in abruptly initiated jibes the MADD will move right along.
